<image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - We started in the bar with two Blackbird signature cocktails: Kill Bill and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (both $17). We love creative craft cocktails, and both of these lived up to the hype.</image:title>

      <image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - Wok-Charred Edamame ($11)</image:title>
<image:caption>The edamame was one of the simplest surprises. I’ve never had edamame prepared this way, and the char from the wok added a grill-like smokiness that transformed a typical appetizer into something I’m still thinking about.</image:caption>

<image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - Pork Belly “Tiki” Bao Bun ($7)</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m a sucker for a bao bun, and Blackbird’s “Tiki” version was another highlight. The bao bun was thin and pillowy soft. The pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender. Grilled pineapple, serrano chili and sweet and sour sauce achieved a perfect balance between sweet and heat. Peanuts added texture and a welcome crunch. The combination of these ingredients made each bite interesting. My only complaint is that we only ordered one, so I had to share it with my husband.</image:caption>

<image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - Thai Beef Jerky ($19)</image:title>
<image:caption>Our server recommended we try the Thai Beef Jerky. The beef in this dish is dried and then fried, which results in meat that’s tender on the inside and slightly crisp on the outside. A hint of sweetness was easily balanced by the accompanying smoked chili and Chinese mustard sauces. My husband and I agreed that the mustard sauce balanced the meat’s flavor best. (And that's a strong endorsement from my husband; he doesn't even like mustard.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - Tuna Poke Crispy Rice ($19)</image:title>
<image:caption>Though it wasn’t without merit, this was a bit of a “miss” for us. The tuna was fresh and delicious. However, I wished that the rice was fried a bit crispier for a better texture contrast with the tuna. And although the wasabi tobiko seasoning on the plate looked innocuous, it packed a fiery punch. I discovered that the hard way when I dragged my rice through it, a spicy mistake I only made once.</image:caption>

<image:title>Eat - Bonita Foodie Reviews: Blackbird Modern Asian - Bangkok Street Noodles ($25)</image:title>
<image:caption>We finished our meal with a bowl of Bangkok Street Noodles. This was our least favorite dish for one reason: They were sweet. None of the listed ingredients prepared us for that — in fact, they have a “spicy” warning on the menu. (Which was fair because every so often a fiery bite sent me scrambling for water.) This was one of the few misses; the sweetness overwhelmed the other flavors, and it lacked the sweet-heat balance achieved by other dishes we tried. The noodles themselves were wonderful and the highlight of the dish.</image:caption>

<image:title>Do - Spend a Day in Matlacha - The villas are comfortable and provided everything we needed for our short stay, including coffee from Matagalpa, Nicaragua … another place I’ve visited, but more than a decade ago. There was a fridge for us to store our snacks (we brought croissants, chips, chicken salad and a small apple pie), and a microwave.</image:title>

<image:title>Do - Spend a Day in Matlacha - It’s located right on the canal with plenty of outdoor seating areas for guests to use. We enjoyed a glass of wine by the water at sunset, while a guest from another villa fished from the dock. There are free kayaks for guests, which we took advantage of twice: Once for a lazy late afternoon paddle to look at the homes, then again for a sunrise paddle along the mangroves. From our kayak that morning, we saw a mom and baby dolphin feeding, abundant bird life and loads of leaping mullet.</image:title>

<image:title>Do - Spend a Day in Matlacha - Yucatan feels more tropical and touristy. It has abundant seating inside and along the water, and a huge bar (with some swing seating). This restaurant made me feel like “I’m on vacation!” in the most Florida way possible. The menu is seafood-focused but has something for everyone.</image:title>

<image:title>Do - Spend a Day in Matlacha - Aside from visiting the art galleries, another Matlacha must-do is getting on the water. We kayaked, although boating is another solid option. Seeing the island from the water gives you a whole different perspective. We saw the damage and the recovery from Hurricane Ian as we paddled along the canals: homes being lifted, homes abandoned, homes filled with people who were clearly having a great time. We saw the charm that draws visitors as well as scars from a hurricane that changed the community.</image:title>
<image:caption>Most of all, what we saw was the “real Florida” — continued change, resilience surrounded by the beauty of nature.</image:caption>
